Court Piece online

Rang · Rung · Coat Piece · Kot Piece · Court Peace · Hokm

Court Piece is the four-player partnership card game of India and Pakistan, played at weddings, on long train journeys and on the family charpai, and by families abroad who grew up with it. One player looks at just five cards and names the trump, the rang, for the whole table; then thirteen tricks decide the round.

Rung Royal plays it the way families do, in five games and eight languages, in the free app on Android and iPhone: against three bots, or online at a private table with your own people.

The five games

• Single Sir
The classic: every trick counts, and seven tricks win the round.
• Double Sir
The pile game: the same player must win two tricks in a row to collect.
• Hidden Rung
The trump is laid face down, and shown only when someone asks.
• Be-Ranga
No trump call: the first card that cannot follow suit sets the trump.
• Mendikot
The cousin where the tens decide: capture three or four of them.

Court Piece in one minute

• Four players in two teams of two. Partners sit opposite each other.
• Play goes anticlockwise — to the right.
• First hand: everyone draws a card, and the highest card chooses the trump.
• Every hand after that, the player to the dealer's right chooses.
• Five cards each first, then four more and four more — 13 each.
• The trump is chosen from those first five cards.
• Follow the suit that was led if you can.
• If you can't, play any card. You never have to play a trump.
• The highest trump wins the trick. With no trump in it, the highest card of the suit led wins.
• Whoever wins a trick leads the next one.
• The round ends as soon as a team has 7 tricks.
• Winning the first 7 tricks straight is a court, and it ends the round.

One game, many names

Court Piece is the English name, and it points at the court, the kot: taking the first seven tricks of a round straight. Coat Piece and Kot Piece are the same word as it is heard and typed across Punjab, Delhi and Pakistan.

At home the game is often just Rang or Rung, after the trump suit, and "rang kya hai?" is the question of every hand. In Iran the same game is Hokm. The rules to the card are the same everywhere; only the word on the door changes.
